The Delaware River runs 330 miles from the river's headwaters
near Hancock, NY to the Delaware Bay (410 miles if you consider its
longest branch). When you combine water uses for drinking,
agricultural and industrial activities, over 15 million people rely
on water from the Delaware River basin. The Delaware River basin drains
13, 539 square miles from Pennsylvania (50%), New Jersey (23%), New
York (19%) and Delaware (8%). The Delaware River forms the PA-NJ
border, and part of the PA-NY border.
In 1961, President Kennedy and
the governors of Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania
signed legislation to create the Delaware River Basin Commission
(DRBC) to manage the Delaware River basin, with the US Army
Corps of Engineers serving as the federal representative.
The DRBC oversees
programs for water supply allocation, water quality protection,
regulatory review for permitting, watershed planning and water
conservation initiatives, recreation, flood loss reduction and
drought management.
