Dominion produces, stores, distributes and trades energy
through 13 companies in 12 states.
Dominion’s corporate roots extend back to the
late 1700s, but it was the creation of Virginia Railway and Power
Company in 1909 that marked the official beginning of today’s Dominion. The
initial company was a trolley service that also supplied power and
distributed natural gas.
Dominion's electric distribution is through Dominion North Carolina Power
and Dominion Virginia Power, with electric transmission
through Electric Transmission in North Carolina and Virginia.
Dominion's gas distribution is handled by Dominion East Ohio and
Dominion Hope in West Virginia, with Dominion Peoples in
Pennsylvania recently being sold.
Dominion's gas transmission is the work of four companies; Dominion
Transmission with 7,800 miles of pipeline running through six
states — New York, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West
Virginia; Dominion Cove Point LNG, LP in Maryland;
Dominion Gathering-Producer Services; and Dominion
Exploration and Production. Dominion operates 26 underground
natural gas storage fields and 93 compressor stations.
Dominion's other companies include Dominion Clearinghouse which
trades and markets energy; Dominion Generation in charge of
power plants; Dominion Retail which is a marketing branch;
and Dominion Technical Solutions, Inc. for engineering,
