Our look at
RANGE RESOURCES

  RANGE RESOURCES APPALACHIA LLC

Brief History

Range Resources Corporation was incorporated in Ohio in 1976 as Lomak Petroleum Inc.  Lomak was acquired by Snyder Oil Company in 1988. In 1997 Lomak increased its Pennsylvania holdings, buying properties from Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation. Range Resources was created in 1998, the result of a merger between Lomak Petroleum Inc. and Domain Energy Corporation. In 1999, Range Resources formed Great Lakes Energy Partners, a joint venture with FirstEnergy Corporation.

Marcellus Shale Background

In 2004-2005, Fort Worth Texas based Range Resources drilled the first Marcellus Shale gas wells. These three wells were located in Washington County Pennsylvania. Hence their nickname:

"The Mothers of Marcellus"

By the end of 2006, Range had 314,00 acres leased in the Marcellus Shale gas play with 3 horizontal wells and 14 vertical wells already drilled. Range Resources had plans for another 40 horizontal wells in 2008.

The Pittsburgh office at
Southpointe opened in early 2007 with one former Halliburton employee, V.P. Ray Walker, Jr. and has expanded to a 120 person operation, according to Range's early 2009 reports.

Range Resources is the third-largest natural gas driller in the US, and the parent company of
Range Production Co.

Range Resources closed its Houston, Texas office Nov. 1, 2009.

UPDATES

July 2009 - In a stock deal with Penneco Oil Company, Inc. and Penneco Pipeline Corporation, Range offered and sold 380,229 shares of Range Resources common stock (Symbol: RRC) with a par value of 1¢ per share, making the deal worth approximately $19 million (calculation uses an early 2010 stock price of $50 per share). The shares were offered and sold pursuant to a prospectus dated July 8, 2009.

December 2009 - Range sold its New York properties for $36 million.

2010 - Range plans to drill and case 150 horizontal Marcellus Shale wells.

March 2010 - Range expects to close the sale of its tight sand properties in Ohio for $330 million.
