The 444-mile Susquehanna River originates at Otsego Lake in New York
and flows into the Chesapeake Bay, draining 27,510 square miles of
watershed in three states: New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The
Susquehanna provides half of the freshwater flow into the Chesapeake
Bay.The need for coordination of
Susquehanna River efforts led to the Susquehanna River Basin
Compact being signed in 1970. The Compact was adopted by the US
Congress and the state legislatures of New York, Maryland and
Pennsylvania. The Compact also established the Susquehanna River
Basin Commission (SRBC) to guide the administration,
conservation and development of the Susquehanna’s water resources.
