December 2009 - Chesapeake Energy is partnering with Spectra Energy to expand two natural gas pipeline systems from Marcellus Shale gas fields into New York City. Spectra is expanding the Texas Eastern and Algonquin pipeline systems. Included are 16 miles of 30-inch pipeline from Manhattan to Staten Island.

  
Spectra Energy Corporation has over 7,000 employees working in natural gas gathering and processing, transmission and storage, and distribution with over 19,000 miles of transmission pipelines. 
   
Spectra Energy Corporation wholly owns Algonquin Gas Transmission, BC Pipeline Division, BC Field Services Division, East Tennessee Natural Gas, Market Hub Partners, Natural Gas Liquids Division, Texas Eastern Transmission, and Union Gas.
 
Spectra Energy Corp. has ownership interests in DCP Midstream, Gulfstream Natural Gas System, Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline and Spectra Energy Partners. In Canada, Spectra owns Western Canada Transmission and Processing.
  
Spectra is partners with New Jersey Resources in Steckman Ridge, which has gas wells and a large gas storage field in south central Pennsylvania. Steckman Ridge pipelines interconnect Texas Eastern and Dominion transmission lines to eastern and northeastern markets in the US.

Historical highlights for Spectra Energy Corporation:

1929 – Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company

1947 – Texas Eastern Transmission was founded to move natural gas from Texas to the Northeastern United States

1953 – Algonquin Gas Transmission began delivery of Gulf Coast natural gas to New England

1985 – Anadarko Petroleum spun-off

1989 – Texas Eastern / Panhandle Eastern merger – Creating a new company with four major pipelines: Algonquin Gas Transmission, Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line, Texas Eastern Transmission and Trunkline Gas

1996 – Name changed to PanEnergy Corporation

1997 – PanEnergy merger with Duke Power to form Duke Energy Corporation

1999 – Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline began service

2000 – Duke Energy purchased East Tennessee Natural Gas

2002 – Duke Energy acquired Westcoast Energy

2005 – Sale of TEPPCO

2007 – Duke Energy spun off Spectra Energy as a publicly traded natural gas business. Spectra Energy formed a Master Limited Partnership, Spectra Energy Partners, LP, while retaining 85% ownership
